Tinchuley is a remote village located about 30 kms from Darjeeling town. Takdah Cantonment is a settlement located 4 km. from Tinchuley. It is now a popular tourist centers of the Darjeeling hills. Takdah and Tinchuley is about 73kms from NJP Station, 77kms from Bagdogra Airport and 35 kms from Kalimpong Town. The scenic roads, pine and fir trees, some great Kanchenjunga view points, tea and orange gardens makes it an ideal destination for people looking for solitude and nature. Tinchuley and Takdah has also become a prominent destination for biological and geographical excursions and medical research works.
Takdah was a British cantonment area in the 1900s and it still holds that old world charm still exists. The place is surrounded by hills and cannot be seen easily from the other side of the mountains which made it a perfect place to build their cantonment. Also Darjeeling a modern city is close by. Takdah, reputed for some of the best British heritage bungalows with beautifully maintained gardens. During the British period, Takdah was a prominent British Cantonment area and was also famed for its reputed tea gardens. The British heritage bungalows are located right in the middle of these tea gardens. The area is also a prominent attraction because of the forests of pine and cedar trees and beautiful orchid flower gardens. One can enjoy the panoramic view of the tea gardens with sightings of tea plucking activities carried out by locals of the region. The bungalows are older than over a century, but are well maintained and kept intact and also referred to as Kothis.
There are around 10 colonial British colonial bungalows at Takdah converted for the purpose of tourist stay. Some are converted into church or local schools. The bungalows were built between the years 1905 and 1915. The bungalow has been kept and restored well by the locals in its previous glory with upgraded modern facilities for tourists. 24 hour running hot & cold waters, geysers, western styled bathrooms, fireplace and kitchen with dining are the amenities provided here. There is a spacious English styled porch or covered area at the entrance to the bungalows where one can spend the evening watching the beautiful nature alone or with your family and friends.
